Hand Restraint Therapy

What is Healthy-Side Restraint Therapy?

Hand restraint therapy, or constraint-induced movement therapy of the healthy side, is a highly effective technique with solid scientific evidence for the treatment of the upper limb. It is applied in patients who tend to use only the healthy side, leaving the affected side “forgotten”.

At FIVAN, we carry out this intervention in people with hemiparesis secondary to stroke, cerebral palsy, trauma, or in children with obstetrical brachial palsy.

Objectives and Methodology of the Therapy

The main objective is to improve the amount of movement on the affected side and encourage its functional use in daily life. To do this, the use of the healthy side is restricted for at least one hour a day, promoting the execution of repetitive and functional tasks with the affected side: playing, eating, dressing, cleaning, etc.

The goal is not a perfect movement, but to increase the spontaneous activity of the affected side of the body, which progressively improves functionality. This therapy can be applied from 3 months of age, adapting the intensity according to the stage of development.

How Do We Do it at FIVAN?

Our team of physical therapists performs a three-step process:

  1. Initial evaluation to determine the functional status of the affected limb.

  2. Individualized treatment planning, with intensity and tasks adapted to each case.

  3. Final re-evaluation to measure the improvements obtained and adjust future goals.

Benefits of Restraint Therapy

  • Increases spontaneous movement of the affected arm, in single-handed or two-handed tasks.

  • Improves functional autonomy and motor control.

  • Increases strength, range of motion, and may reduce spasticity.

  • Enhances the brain representation of the affected arm, consolidating the effects over time.

  • It is an individualized treatment based on real objectives.
