Grief in Quarantine

Grief, a Difficult Experience Even under Normal Circumstances

The loss of a loved one is one of the most painful experiences a person can have. Under normal conditions, it is already a great emotional challenge, but the current situation has added barriers that further complicate this process.

The Impact of Confinement and the Lack of Farewells

Due to the pandemic and health measures, many families have not been able to perform farewell rituals such as wakes or funerals. This inability to accompany, say goodbye, or share the pain with others has generated more complicated grief, especially in those who have not had the opportunity to say goodbye.

Recommendations for Coping with Grief in Isolation

From FIVAN, we want to share some guidelines to help people in mourning get through this difficult time:

💬 Saying Goodbye, Even Symbolically

If it is not possible to do it in person, it is recommended to send a message, video, audio or letter. Although it does not replace physical contact, it can create a space for connection and emotional closure.

🧠 Taking Care of our Thoughts

Avoid focusing on ideas that you cannot verify or control, such as thinking if they were alone or if they suffered. These ruminations increase the pain and do not provide comfort.

💛 Accepting Emotions without Judgment

We are in an exceptional situation. Feeling bad, sad, or guilty is normal. Allowing yourself to feel and share those emotions without demands accelerates the recovery process.

🤝 Seeking Support from a Distance

While it is not possible to meet, calls and video calls can be a bridge to share memories, emotions, and support each other in grief.

⏳ Managing the Times of Pain

Being at home can amplify sad thoughts. Being aware of those moments and balancing them with healthy routines helps to cope with grief in a more adaptive way.

Taking Care of Yourself is also Part of the Process

Each person experiences grief in their own way, and there is no single or correct way to do it. The important thing is to give space to the pain, seek emotional support and not feel alone.
We hope these tips can be helpful for those who are going through this difficult experience.
